I’d had my eye on the Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial for a while, and when Cult Beauty had an offer on I had to go for it!
You may have heard of this product by now as it caused quite a stir in the skincare world, or you may have at least heard of the brand.
I’ve been using the Babyfacial for a few weeks now so I feel I’m at a point where I can share my honest views on my experience with it.
What is it?
The T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial is a chemical exfoliant mask that packs in 25% AHAs and 2% BHAs into it. Components include exfoliating acids such as glycolic, tartaric, lactic, citric and salicylic acid. It also has soothing properties from milk thistle, matcha tea and apple to counteract the harshness of the acids. The P.H. is 3.5 to prevent redness and sensitivity, which we will come onto later on.
How do you use it?
This product is designed to be used weekly by spreading a relatively thin layer over the face and left for up to 20 minutes. It is advised that if you’re new to the product, you start leave it on for 10 minutes at first and then build up to 20 minutes with each use.
It then needs to be washed off with warm water.
The direction is to follow it with the Virgin Marula Facial Oil from Drunk Elephant which contains antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9. It is designed to nourish the skin, which is advisable after using a product as strong as the Babyfacial! I have occasionally followed-up with the facial oil which was always nice and my skin certainly felt nourished, but as I don’t have a full bottle in my stash and I have other skin-friendly products in my current routine, I haven’t used it every time and I can’t say my skin has suffered as a result. It’s definitely a nice-to-have but not a necessity.
It’s also very important to use sunscreen (preferably a high-factor!) after using chemical exfoliants, so it’s definitely necessary to apply some after using this (even if you’ve used it the night before, as your skin will be renewing).
How I found it and the results
I was intrigued as to whether or not the Babyfacial would live up to the hype when I first started using it, as there was a big buzz around it.
I have been using it at night before I follow-up with my evening routine (minus the products that include AHAs and BHAs on the same night).
Initially, I did experience some redness, tingling and slight stinging but I did expect this. For me, it wasn’t so much so that it set off alarm bells, so I persevered each week and this reduced over time where I assume my skin adapted and adjusted to the new product. I will admit that I didn’t go in for 10 minutes at first and just went for the full whack.
I’ve found that my skin is noticeably smoother, brighter and my pores feel less in-my-face (pun intended). Although it is quite an intense treatment, it’s well worth it with how effective it is at achieving the desired results.
The consistency is relatively thick but glides on and spreads easily enough, so it isn’t a battle to get an even layer by any stretch. I found the colour interesting for my shade of skin – it is a nude colour so for my skin tone it isn’t particularly noticeable but just appears as a shiny layer.
One thing I will emphasise is that this is not for use on the skin around the eyes as it is very strong and will irritate the sensitive skin there.
My final thoughts
This is a great product that is well worth the money.
It’s prudent to proceed with caution if your skin isn’t accustomed to chemical exfoliants or strong products in general, especially for people with sensitive or problematic skin.
That doesn’t mean to say it shouldn’t be considered, but it would be worth introducing and building up other products with AHAs and BHAs first, as the composition in this is quite strong.
Overall it is a product that I would recommend for anyone who is ready for some heavy-duty pore cleaning and refining products.
